Chané Bolton

Meet the Artist

WHO IS CHANé?

Chané Bolton (b. 1976) was born and raised in Pretoria, South Africa, where she continues to live and work in the suburb of Wapadrand. She holds a BA with a specialization in Fine Arts from the University of Pretoria. Over the years, Bolton has honed her artistic practice through experience in galleries across the United States and by advising South African corporate institutions on the effective management of their art collections. Her work has been exhibited both in South Africa and internationally, including in New Zealand.

Bolton draws inspiration from the rhythms and cycles of nature, as well as from deeply personal experiences. She is fascinated by the repetitive and ordered patterns found in natural processes and reflects this cyclicality in her creative practice. For Bolton, the act of making art is emotionally charged and rooted in memory and reflection—small details from lived experiences often serve as the foundation for her work.

Her art explores the expression of identity, thought, and feeling. She believes that engaging with art opens space for dialogue, introspection, and contemplation. In her visual language, imperfect symmetries emerge through varied forms and textural layers, creating a dynamic sense of rhythm.
Bolton’s creative process often begins with the exploration of texture and color. She works predominantly in oil paint, skillfully blending matte and glossy finishes while experimenting with brushstrokes, found objects, and tactile techniques to create complex surfaces.

Through this intuitive and layered approach, she constructs works that are rich in nuance and depth, inviting viewers into a meditative and sensory experience.

Chané's Inspiration and Process

I draw inspiration from the ebbs and flows that occur within nature and the cyclicality that nature provides. Cyclical events happen in a particular order, one following the other, and are often repeated.

My creative process transpires in a similar manner with a deep emotional connection to each work. Many different forms and shapes create imperfect symmetries with unique textural variations. This equilibrium provides an unmistakable sense of rhythm. Experimentation through the pragmatic alteration of observed textures and exploiting a varied palette is the starting point of the creative journey. The ability to texturally construct a multitude of nuances and scrutinising textural variations.

Embracing brush strokes, exploiting the use of various objects to create further markings and texture while additionally working with thin glossy and matt layers of a variety of mediums. Each work of art is unique and one-of-a-kind artwork created with the upmost care.
